Former England defender Danny Mills has suggested that Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha never played for Premier League giants Arsenal or Manchester United because of his unpredictable, free-spirited style.

Okocha, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most gifted players, dazzled European football fans with his skill and creativity during spells at Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, and Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Bolton Wanderers in 2002. His flair made him a cult hero in England, but despite his impact, he was never signed by the Premier League’s most dominant sides.

Speaking in a recent interview, Mills said Okocha’s artistry, while entertaining, may not have aligned with the structured football philosophies of top clubs at the time.

“Jay-Jay Okocha was phenomenal to watch, but at big clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United, managers often wanted players who would stick to tactical discipline. Okocha’s free-flowing style probably counted against him,” Mills argued.

During his four years at Bolton, Okocha became a fan favourite and even captained the club, helping them retain Premier League status and reach the 2004 League Cup final. His legacy as one of the most skillful players of his generation endures, with fans still reminiscing about his trademark dribbles, audacious flicks, and breathtaking goals.

Although he never donned the colours of England’s biggest clubs, Okocha remains celebrated globally for bringing joy and artistry to the game, inspiring a generation of footballers in Nigeria and beyond.
