The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to residents of the Lekki area, cautioning that borehole water in the axis may be dangerously contaminated with untreated sewage.
Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services, made this disclosure during a stakeholders meeting held recently in the state. According to him, residents drilling boreholes in the area are “most likely drinking shit water” due to poor wastewater management and environmental challenges.
“Yesterday it rained heavily, which is unusual for this time of year – what we call the August break,” Adegbite said. “Flooding remains a major concern despite government investment, and untreated wastewater is a serious health risk. Everyone digging boreholes in the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I’ll call ‘shit water.’”
He stressed that the government is working on comprehensive wastewater treatment solutions to address the growing risk of disease outbreaks caused by groundwater contamination.
Adegbite added that until treatment systems are fully in place, residents should take urgent steps to test and treat their water, especially in areas prone to sewage seepage. The state, he said, will continue to intensify efforts to combat flooding and environmental hazards in Lekki and other vulnerable zones.
