German football legend Thomas Müller has officially joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC, marking one of the biggest signings in Major League Soccer (MLS) history. The move ends Müller’s 17-year career with FC Bayern Munich, where he won everything from Bundesliga titles to the FIFA Club World Cup.
Vancouver acquired the Discovery Priority for Müller from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), $100,000 in 2026 GAM, and a conditional $100,000 in 2026 GAM. He has been signed through the 2025 season with a Designated Player option for 2026.
“Thomas is a world-class player, the ultimate Raumdeuter, known for elite chance creation, spatial awareness, and off-the-ball movement,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC CEO and sporting director. “This is a statement signing and a transformative moment for our club.”
Müller, 34, is expected to arrive in Vancouver next Wednesday, with his first training session and media unveiling scheduled for Thursday. He will be available for the Whitecaps’ home game on Sunday, August 17, one of six remaining home matches as the team pushes toward the playoffs.
“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” Müller said. “The conversations I’ve had with Axel Schuster and coach Jesper Sørensen were exciting. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans at BC Place.”
During his storied career, Müller made 756 appearances for Bayern, scoring 250 goals and providing 238 assists, winning 33 major trophies, including 13 Bundesliga titles, 6 DFB-Pokals, and 2 UEFA Champions League titles. He also played 131 matches for Germany, scoring 45 goals, assisting 41, and lifting the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The signing boosts a Vancouver side currently leading the MLS Western Conference in points per game, making them serious contenders for the 2025 title.
