Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently holding a closed-door meeting at the Zamfara State Government House in Gusau, ahead of the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Monday.
Although details of the agenda were not immediately available, party sources suggest that the meeting is part of ongoing consultations to resolve internal disputes and forge a united front before the high-stakes NEC session.
The PDP has in recent months been grappling with leadership tensions, and the upcoming NEC meeting is expected to deliberate on some of the party’s most sensitive issues. Chief among them is the zoning of its 2027 presidential ticket.
According to insiders, three options are on the table: zoning the ticket to the South, zoning it to the North, or leaving the contest open to all regions. However, indications point to strong backing for the South, with some stakeholders arguing that the region is constitutionally entitled to another four years to balance rotational arrangements.
“The PDP needs clarity and consensus ahead of 2027. These meetings are crucial to ensure that decisions are made in the spirit of fairness, inclusivity, and unity,” a party chieftain familiar with the discussions told reporters.
The outcome of the governors’ deliberations is expected to influence the tone and direction of the NEC meeting, which will bring together members of the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, serving governors, former governors, National Assembly caucus members, and other critical stakeholders.
Analysts say the zoning debate could either strengthen or further divide the party, depending on how consensus is managed. For many, the decision will not only shape PDP’s electoral strategy but also determine its ability to position itself as a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the time of filing this report, the Gusau meeting was still ongoing, with no official statement yet issued.
