The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant increase in the average retail price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with a 12.5kg cylinder selling for ₦21,010.56 in June 2025.

This reflects a 1.46% month-on-month rise from ₦20,709.11 in May 2025, and a sharp 33.52% jump compared to ₦15,736.27 in June 2024.

In its latest report, the NBS revealed that Delta State recorded the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at ₦23,108.44, followed by Cross River (₦22,982.89) and Rivers (₦22,971.27). On the lower end, Yobe State posted the cheapest average price at ₦19,000, with Niger (₦19,242.48) and Jigawa (₦20,025.94) also among the most affordable.

Regionally, the South-South recorded the highest average price at ₦22,179.08, trailed by the South-East at ₦21,623.86. The South-West had the lowest regional average at ₦20,402.42.

The cost of refilling a 5kg LPG cylinder also climbed to ₦8,323.95 in June, marking a 1.92% increase from ₦8,167.43 in May and a 19.49% rise from ₦6,966.03 in June 2024.

Delta again topped the chart for 5kg refills at ₦9,243.38, followed by Cross River (₦9,193.16) and Rivers (₦9,188.51). Oyo State had the lowest average at ₦7,100, with Plateau (₦7,200) and Yobe (₦7,600) not far behind.

The South-South also led regional pricing for 5kg cylinders with an average of ₦8,871.63, followed by the South-East (₦8,649.55), while the South-West remained the most affordable at ₦7,960.42.

The surge in prices comes amid ongoing regulatory efforts by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), which recently shut down 19 illegal LPG outlets in Delta State, mainly targeting smaller cylinders used for household cooking.
