Former Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has lamented what he described as persistent political confusion in the state, warning that governance cannot thrive without clarity and the rule of law.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday night, Cole expressed concern that Rivers continues to make headlines for the wrong reasons, driven by overlapping political loyalties and unresolved power struggles.
“Rivers State always seems to be in the headlines for the wrong reasons,” he said. “We continue to use Rivers State as an experiment of any type of politics. We don’t know which party is in existence — is it the PDP or the APC, or a mixture of both? Everything just seems wrong.”
He singled out the uncertainty surrounding the political alignment of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as a major source of instability. “I have no idea whether Wike is in the PDP, whether it’s in APC, or a mixture of both,” Cole stated.
Cole, who insists he remains the leader of the APC in Rivers, said his faction remains legitimate but stressed that the ultimate direction depends on the stance of President Bola Tinubu.
He maintained that resolving Rivers’ political muddle is critical to establishing effective governance. “We must establish good governance and the rule of law in Rivers State for anything to begin to work,” he said.
