The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed allegations that the recent arrest of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was unlawful or involved any form of torture.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the reports as “false, misleading, and aimed at inciting public distrust in law enforcement.”

According to Adejobi, Sowore was taken into custody in accordance with due legal process over what police described as “activities that are currently under investigation.” He added that the activist was treated with dignity and that his rights were fully respected during the arrest and detention.

“The Nigeria Police Force operates within the ambit of the law. We do not engage in torture or any act that violates human rights. All procedures in this matter were carried out transparently and in compliance with statutory provisions,” the statement read.

Sowore, a prominent critic of the government and publisher of Sahara Reporters, was reportedly picked up during a public gathering in Lagos. His arrest sparked outrage among supporters, human rights groups, and civil society organisations, who accused security agencies of targeting dissenting voices.

The police have urged the public to await the outcome of their investigation before drawing conclusions, while rights groups continue to call for greater accountability in law enforcement.
