The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of carrying out an armed invasion of its premises in the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday, OOPL described the incident as a “Gestapo-like” operation, alleging that at about 2 a.m., over 50 armed men, purportedly EFCC agents led by one “Olapade,” stormed the complex, firing shots into the air and threatening to kill people. The raid reportedly triggered panic among guests and residents, with several sustaining injuries while trying to escape.
OOPL’s Managing Director, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, said “Olapade” claimed they were acting on intelligence about a private event in the library’s amusement facility and insisted that the police had been informed. However, police officers stationed at the OOPL gates and those sent from Kemta Police Station allegedly confirmed they were unaware of any EFCC operation and that no warrant was presented.
Describing the incident as a “blatant violation of rights” and an “invasion of private property,” the OOPL management said it has begun its own investigation and will take the matter up with relevant authorities, including the EFCC, police, and Department of State Services (DSS).
The statement demanded a public explanation and apology from the EFCC to the library, its guests, and those injured, warning that failure to do so would prompt legal action.
