The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the upgrade of the Nigeria Police Force Legal Section to the Directorate of Legal Services, as part of ongoing strategic reforms to strengthen institutional capacity across departments.
In a statement on Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the Directorate will now serve as the apex legal arm of the Force, responsible for legal training, policy review, and structured engagement with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.
Egbetokun also appointed AIG Ohiozoba O. Ehiede as the first Director of the Directorate, citing his wealth of experience, leadership skills, and distinguished service as key to driving excellence in fulfilling its mandate.
According to the IGP, the creation of the Directorate is aimed at enhancing prosecutorial effectiveness, aligning police operations with global best practices, and boosting professionalism, transparency, and efficiency in legal processes.
He urged all police officers, particularly legal practitioners within the Force, to support the Directorate in improving justice delivery, increasing prosecutorial success rates, and strengthening public confidence in police operations.
