Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, better known as AY, has refuted claims circulating online that he regrets the collapse of his marriage to his estranged wife, Mabel.

In a post shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, AY dismissed the rumours as false and malicious, stressing that he has no plans to reconcile with Mabel or return to the marriage. The comedian, who has often used his platforms to address sensitive issues in his personal and professional life, described the reports as baseless fabrications designed to mislead the public.

“I have seen various publications suggesting that I regret the breakdown of my marriage and that I am working on reconciling with my estranged wife. Let me be clear: this is not true. I am not making any such plans,” AY wrote.

He also issued a stern warning to bloggers and online platforms spreading the rumours, threatening legal action against those who continue to peddle what he described as “false narratives” about his private life. “There are consequences for spreading lies. Anyone who persists in fabricating stories about me and my family will face the full weight of the law,” he added.

The clarification comes after weeks of speculation about the state of AY’s marriage, following his public confirmation earlier this year that he and Mabel had separated. The couple, who tied the knot in 2008, share two daughters and were once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most admired celebrity families.

Since the announcement of their separation, social media has been awash with rumours of possible reconciliation, with some blogs suggesting that AY had expressed regret over the split. Thursday’s statement, however, appears to have put such speculation to rest.

Fans and industry colleagues have since reacted to his post, with many urging the public to respect the comedian’s privacy. Some also criticized the culture of spreading unverified claims about celebrities, which often exacerbates personal challenges they may already be dealing with.

Observers note that AY’s decision to threaten legal action reflects a growing frustration among Nigerian entertainers over the impact of false online reporting. Several celebrities, including music stars and Nollywood actors, have in recent months taken bloggers to court over damaging stories.

Entertainment analysts believe that AY’s firm response is aimed at discouraging further speculation about his marriage, allowing him and his estranged wife to navigate their personal issues without undue public pressure. “Celebrities are also humans. Constant rumours about their private lives can be emotionally draining. AY’s stance shows he wants boundaries respected,” one commentator noted.

For now, the comedian, who remains one of Nigeria’s most successful entertainers, appears focused on his career and upcoming projects. He recently completed a series of stand-up shows across Lagos and Abuja, and has hinted at new film collaborations in the coming months.

While his marriage remains a subject of public interest, AY has made it clear that false reports of reconciliation will no longer be tolerated.
